What is the
Environmental Impact of E3?
Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel, producing primarily carbon dioxide, water vapor and small amounts of nitrogen oxides. As such, natural gas is one of the most environmentally-friendly fuels. Other fossil fuels are coal and oil, which together with natural gas, account for about 88 percent of U.S. energy consumption.
ESNG takes its responsibility to the environment very seriously, adhering to responsible business practices that benefit the environment. The E3 Project is no exception.
The Company anticipates that the construction phase of the E3 Project will have a minimal and temporary impact, at most, on the environment. ESNG will be working extensively with its engineering and environmental consultants to optimize the project layout and minimize the effect that the construction activities will have on the Delmarva region's natural resources.
To ensure we do what is best for the environment, ESNG already has and will continue to analyze a host of environmental criteria including: endangered and threatened species, federal and state wetlands, cultural resources, submerged aquatic vegetation, natural oyster beds, hazardous waste sites, and forest, conservation and agricultural easements.
To solicit their input, we have already initiated dialogue and meetings with several environmental groups. Throughout the course of the E3 Project we will continue to work with our community, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and especially environmental groups to ensure the environmental success of this project.
Important Environmental Highlights of the E3 Project:
- E3 will not traverse federal or state wild and scenic rivers or designated wetlands and forestlands of federal or state importance.
- The vast majority of the pipeline will follow existing right-of-ways - 80% will be on state right-of-ways and approximately 20% on personal property right-of-ways. In most of the areas, the pipe will run in areas adjacent to other utilities, roads or railway.
- Increased availability of clean-burning natural gas will have a favorable long-term impact on the Delmarva Peninsula's air quality.
- During construction off-shore, water quality and turbidity will be monitored to ensure no lasting impact will be created on the Bay or its natural resources.
